Opioids in Dentistry (Act 124)

The Opioids in Dentistry “Act 124” course covers the safe and competent use of opioids for managing acute moderate to severe dental pain using
opioid prescribing principles for general dentists and dental specialists. The course provides the most current information on minimizing opioid abuse through patient education, patient assessment and screening (for substance use disorders), and the use of tools, such as prescription monitoring programs.
Learning Objectives:
- To understand the effect of opioid pain medications on the body and brain
- To effectively evaluate patients’ risk factors, treatment needs, and overall substance abuse risk
- To completely discuss the risks of abuse and addiction associated with opioid medication with patients
- To practice safe and competent opioid prescribing for acute pain

Mr. Matthew Spady is a safety professional with over 18 years of experience in providing consultancy to entities in the life sciences and healthcare industries. He earned a BS in Occupational Safety and Health from Columbia Southern University and has worked for Clym Environmental Services since 2006. In his capacity as a regional manager for Clym he has overseen the implementation of comprehensive safety programs, including customized written safety plans, training and audits at biotech companies, colleges and many medical and dental practices. He presently serves as the regional manager for Clym’s Greater Pittsburgh area of operations. In addition, he has completed the requirements for the prestigious Certified Healthcare Environmental Manager professional designation
(HEM), and the Certified HIPAA Privacy Security Expert designation (CHPSE). Mr. Spady is also pioneering plastics recycling in the dental world, to achieve a less then 10 percent true waste accumulation for participating offices. Mr. Spady also achieved accreditation for Clym though NAID for secure document destruction and is now AAA certified. Mr. Spady co-founded and is the director of Pennsylvania Technical Institute, a for-profit school that focuses solely on dental assisting training and education.
