Mastering Implant Success: Diagnosis, Design, and Long-Term Maintenance for Predictable Outcomes

3 Credit Hours

Course Description:
Attendees will be able to recognize the most prevalent issues encountered in both single implant and full arch restorations, including peri-implantitis, screw loosening, prosthesis fracture, and occlusal overload. Attendees will learn how to apply a comprehensive diagnostic process—including CBCT imaging, periodontal evaluation, and occlusal analysis—to assess patient risk factors that contribute to restoration failure. Dentists will understand how to design treatment plans that integrate surgical, prosthetic, and esthetic factors to minimize complications and
optimize long-term success. Attendees will explore how prosthesis material selection, implant positioning, abutment choice, occlusal design, and delivery protocols directly impact the success and maintenance of implants. Dentists will take away practical strategies for post-delivery maintenance, including hygiene instructions, occlusal guard use, and follow-up schedules to ensure implant longevity and patient satisfaction.

Learning Objectives:

  • Identify common biological and mechanical complications in implant restorations
  • Evaluate diagnostic and risk assessment protocols to prevent implant complications
  • Apply strategic treatment planning principles for predictable implant outcomes
  • Design restorations that enhance biomechanical stability and prosthetic longevity
  • Develop maintenance protocols and patient education strategies for long-term implant health

Dr. R. Graham Greenland

Dr. R. Graham Greenland is a board-certified prosthodontist with specialized expertise in implant prosthodontics and oral oncology. A native of Rockford, Michigan, Dr. Greenland’s journey into dentistry was shaped not only by his academic pursuits but also by a profound personal experience: a diagnosis of Stage II Hodgkin’s Lymphoma in 2010, just before beginning dental school. Treated at the Lemmon Holton Cancer Center, he achieved remission in 2011 and returned to the University of Detroit Mercy School of Dentistry with a renewed sense of purpose and commitment to patient care.

His advanced training includes a rigorous three-year residency in Advanced Prosthodontics at the Mayo Clinic in Rochester, Minnesota, where he developed a comprehensive foundation in fixed, removable, and implant prosthetics within a collaborative medical-dental environment. He then completed a highly specialized fellowship in Oral Oncology and Maxillofacial Prosthetics at MD Anderson Cancer Center, where he focused on the integration of prosthetic rehabilitation into comprehensive cancer care.

Dr. Greenland is the founder and clinical director of Greenland Advanced Oral Care, a destination dental center in Grand Rapids, MI, where he leads a multidisciplinary team committed to delivering evidence-based, patient-centered care. His clinical interests include the design and delivery of single-unit implant restorations, implant overdentures, and the development of collaborative models for dental-medical integration.

Outside of the clinic, Dr. Greenland enjoys photography and reading current literature to stay at the forefront of innovations in prosthodontics and oral medicine. He brings a unique perspective shaped by personal resilience, academic rigor, and a passion for excellence in restorative dentistry.
