Radiation Safety Overview for Dental X-ray Operators
2 Credit Hours
Every dental x-ray operator in Pennsylvania needs a periodic refresher course on ionizing radiation, including the definition, sources, hazards, measurements, and biological effects. This course will cover those topics as well as addressing recent scientific studies that are affecting our understanding of exposure and shielding in the dental office. This course meets the training requirements detailed in Pennsylvania Code, Title 25, Section 221.11.
Course Objectives:
- Detail the basic properties of radiation
- Define the units of measurement for radiation
- Identify sources of radiation exposure
- Discuss radiation protection measures
- Provide an overview of the biological effects of radiation exposure
- Discuss types of x-ray equipment
- Review image recording and processing as well as patient exposures and positioning
- Outline operational procedural requirements
- Review guidelines for QA program
- Summarize regulations for X-ray Operators

Mr. Charles Watts

For more than twenty years Mr. Watts has overseen Clym’s expansion and growth, including our comprehensive regulated medical waste (RMW) management service. As a client-focused organization with an entrepreneurial flair for innovation, Clym recognized the need to rethink the traditional medical waste management paradigm to meet our customers’ growing desire for more sustainably focused operations. Drawing on his decades of experience in radiation safety, Mr. Watts is excited to share about current regulations as well as recent studies that affect the way radiation safety will be managed in dental offices in the future.
